The weeks and months after birth

Understanding it

Your body after birth

After birth, your body recovers from pregnancy and delivery while adapting to feeding, carrying and very little sleep. Muscles in the neck, shoulders and back work hard, often in new positions.

Feeling low for a few days after birth is common. If low mood, anxiety or tearfulness last more than two weeks, it may be postpartum depression, which is common and treatable: please talk to your doctor.

For pelvic floor recovery, a pelvic floor physiotherapist is the right specialist. Kim works alongside them.

The Chinese medicine view

Rest, warmth and nourishment

"After birth, rebuild before you rush."

Many traditions, including Chinese medicine, give special care to the weeks after birth. Pregnancy and delivery use a lot of Blood and Qi, so recovery focuses on warmth, rest and nourishing food.

Kim combines massage for the muscles that work hardest with acupuncture for energy, sleep and calm.

Questions

Before you book

How soon after birth can I come?

Many women come once they feel ready, often within the first weeks. After a caesarean birth, wait for your doctor's clearance before any work on the abdomen.

Can I have massage and acupuncture in the same visit?

Yes. Kim is both a registered massage therapist and an acupuncturist, so she can combine both.

Can it help with milk supply?

Some women use acupuncture alongside the support of a lactation consultant. Kim will be honest about what to expect, and the lactation consultant remains your main support.

Is it covered by insurance?

Massage therapy and acupuncture are often covered by extended health plans, and we offer direct billing with most insurers.
